What is Active Meditation?

Written by: Rachael Thomas

Meditation is proven to be an effective way to manage stress — but sitting still is not for everyone. Running thoughts about what’s for dinner, upcoming work deadlines or questioning if you moved the clothes from the washer to the dryer may come up.

If you find yourself struggling to achieve a state of zen through the traditional route of sitting down and closing your eyes, active meditation might be right for you.

So, what is it?

Active meditation is a way to reach a calm state of mind through a physical activity. It forces you to focus on an activity and is a way to trick your mind into slowing down.

Below are a few ways to practice it.

Coloring

Pull out the crayons and paper and draw whatever you’d like (Morgan Harper Nichols makes it look so fun). Or pick up a coloring book and colored pencils on your next store run.

Flying a kite (our founder’s favorite!)

It’s not as easy as it looks and requires you to focus on the wind, the string — and not hitting the other people in the park.

Gardening

Planting flowers, pulling out weeds, and getting your hands in the soil is a great way to ground yourself while also reconnecting with nature. If you don’t have space to garden, try your hand at tending to indoor plants.

Knitting

The repetitive movement of looping yarn through needles is another way to calm yourself. This can also apply to other tasks such as crocheting, sewing, or embroidering.

Walking or running

Reflect on your day as you make your way around your neighborhood or a local trail.

Cooking

Preparing a good meal for yourself or friends and loved ones is a great form of mindfulness.

The bottom line …

Active meditation can take on various forms but it’s all about doing some type of activity that calms you down and brings you joy.
